Lakes on Earth Warming

The largest lakes on Earth to warm over the last 25 years. This Aviation and Space Agency announced the United States or NASA, on Tuesday (23/11/2010). Heating that occurs in these lakes are known after the researcher Philipp Schneider and Simon Hook of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, observe the 167 lakes on Earth using satellite data.

"The researchers reported that the average heating rate is 0.81 degrees Fahrenheit (0.45 degrees Celsius) per decade. Some lakes even heating up to 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) per decade," NASA said in a statement. The researchers found that areas that experienced the greatest improvement is the northern region of Europe. Meanwhile, the warming trend of slightly declining in the southern region of Europe.

Southwestern United States experienced a warming trend is slightly larger than the Great Lakes region. Meanwhile, the tropics, the equator, and the southern hemisphere has a smaller heating rate. Lake Ladoga in Russia and Lake Tahoe in the United States experienced the greatest increase in temperature. Lake Tahoe has increased by 1.7 degrees Celsius since 1985. The Danu Ladoga has increased by 2.2 degrees celsius.

"Our analysis shows a new and independent data to determine the impact of climate change on land on Earth," said Schneider. Responding to the increase in temperature that occur in lakes, Hook said, "We were surprised to learn that some lakes showed an increase that exceeds the temperature increase in air temperature."

Schneider said, the changes in the lake could affect the sustainability of the lake ecosystem. Members of the ecosystem is said to be affected by temperature changes are very small. The results Hook Schneider and published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, published this week. In the study, the researchers chose lakes that measure at least 500 square kilometers and away from the coastline.
